WATER

The water industry faces numerous challenges as its demand continues to grow; from water scarcity, mitigation of natural disasters; consideration of ageing infrastructure or little to no infrastructure. As a result, the industry is embracing new technologies, increasing data acquisition where computational modelling is providing more insight and understanding than ever before. We, at PDL, are supporting you by leveraging our expertise in FEA, CFD, hydraulic modelling and pipe stress analysis to accurately translate your data to reduce your risk, lower cost and enhance the performance of your new or existing assets.

Water is one of the most abundant natural resources on earth but also the scarcest. There is an ever-growing global demand, driven by population growth, lifestyle changes, urbanisation, increased energy demand and rapid growth of developing countries. To meet this demand, the water industry faces many different challenges both nationally and globally.

In responding to these challenges, the industry as a whole is looking to remove some of the assumptions and conservatism built into legacy technology and infrastructure.  By embracing digitisation, using more diverse sensor technology, increasing data acquisition and embracing computational modelling the industry is gaining more insight and the ability to draw deeper trends and ultimately more understanding of the issues than ever before.

As intelligent and complex problem solvers at heart, we are supporting our clients through this journey, leveraging our expertise in highly accurate computational modelling providing an effective translation of this data into value-added knowledge that reduces risk, saves money and enhances the performance of new and existing assets.

We can support you across all your areas of upstream and downstream functions;

  • Wastewater treatment and Water Reclamation.
  • Potable water treatment
  • Seawater and Brackish water desalination

Across each of these water treatment processes, we support the whole supply chain from original equipment manufacturers (OEM’s), engineering consultancy firms, contractors and developers at a national and international level. We bring our world-class analysis expertise in Finite Element Analysis, Computational Fluid Dynamics, Hydraulic modelling and pipe stress analysis to provide greater insight, confidence and control in the critical mechanical components that typically make up these infrastructure projects:

  • Equipment: Pumps, blowers, odour control, HVAC, piping…
  • Water processing technology: Bioreactors, aeration, sludge balancing…
  • Hydraulic structures: Pump stations, vortex drops, pipelines…

We can work with you to either, bring added capacity to your team by providing complementary engineering support or by bringing additional capabilities, experience or knowledge to tackle complex problems.

In the area of process equipment and process technologies; we engage at both the upfront design and research and development stages looking to underpin and optimise its performance reducing the need for multiple and length testing campaigns.

At the project integration level; we apply detailed modelling ensuring the equipment itself and the surrounding structures are fit for purpose. For example; carrying out modal and harmonic analysis on pump sets, foundations and support structures for an inlet pump station of a desalination plant to prevent the excitation of natural frequencies leading to operational issues and inevitably the failure of the assets.

At the larger hydraulic structures and system level; we use computational fluid dynamics and 2D hydraulic modelling to simulate and optimise the hydraulic performance of structures such as water conveyance tunnels and pump station to mitigate turbulent flow conditions; solid settlement; flow rotation at pump inlets and pressure fluctuations causing water hammer effects to name a few assessments.
